What is llms.txt?

llms.txt is a plain-text Markdown file at the root of your website, at yourdomain.com/llms.txt. It gives AI assistants a short, curated summary of your site and links to its most important pages, so they can describe your business from what you wrote rather than piecing it together from whatever pages they happen to read. The format was proposed in 2024 at llmstxt.org.

How to add llms.txt to your site

  1. Write the file: your name as the first line, a one-line summary, then your key pages under a few headings.
  2. Save it as plain text, named exactly llms.txt.
  3. Upload it to the root folder of your website, the same folder as robots.txt, using your host’s file manager or FTP.
  4. Open yourdomain.com/llms.txt in a browser. You should see the raw text, not a web page.
  5. Paste it into the checker above, and update it when your key pages change.

Does llms.txt help SEO?

It isn’t a Google ranking factor. Its job is to help AI assistants understand and describe your business accurately, which matters more as people ask them for recommendations instead of searching.

Is llms.txt the same as robots.txt?

No. robots.txt tells crawlers which pages they may visit. llms.txt tells AI tools which pages are worth reading and what your site is about. Most sites should have both.

Where does llms.txt go?

At the root of your domain, so it loads at https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt. A file in a subfolder won’t be found.
